LIMITING THOUGHTS AND BELIEFS

I came across this poem for the first time yesterday.  It has a unique and thought-provoking structure that captures the way we often think about ourselves.

The poem can be read in two ways - first from top to bottom, where negative thoughts and feelings are expressed, and then from bottom to top, which offers a more optimistic view. It's a powerful reminder that our thoughts and beliefs can either hold us back or propel us forward towards our dreams.

Pretty Ugly written by Abdullah Shoaib

I’m very ugly

So don’t try to convince me that

I am a very beautiful person

Because at the end of the day

I hate myself in every single way

And I’m not going to lie to myself by saying

There is beauty inside of me that matters

So rest assured I will remind myself

That I am a worthless, terrible person

And nothing you say will make me believe

I still deserve love

Because no matter what

I am not good enough to be loved

And I am in no position to believe that

Beauty does exist within me

Because whenever I look in the mirror I always think

Am I as ugly as people say?

Have you ever found yourself doubting your abilities or feeling like you're not good enough? Well, this poem encourages us to challenge those limiting beliefs and negative self-talk. After all, these thoughts aren't facts - they're just stories we tell ourselves.

If you want to overcome those limiting beliefs and negative self-talk, here are some tips to get you started:

First, become aware of those negative thoughts. Pay attention to your mental chatter and notice when you're being self-critical. Then ask yourself if there's any evidence to support those thoughts. Spoiler alert – usually, there isn't!

Next, try reframing those negative thoughts into positive affirmations. For example, instead of "I'm not smart enough to take on a leadership role," try "I have the skills and knowledge to take on this role, and I'm capable of learning more."

Finally, practice self-compassion. Be kind to yourself and treat yourself like you would treat a friend who is going through a tough time. When you practice self-compassion, you'll find it easier to believe in yourself and all that you're capable of achieving.

Remember, you are capable of amazing things! Don't let limiting beliefs and negative self-talk hold you back. Believe in yourself, practice self-love and self-compassion, and watch as your dreams become a reality.
